What are you wanting to edit 4k or 1080p ?

Edit:- scrub that it's a P4 so 4k it must be

So it's just a case of budget really, I can edit 4k on my i5 (4GB RAM) Surface pro 3. But it is a bit slow for the 4k task.

So the starter for 10 might be an i5 based desktop, preferably i7 with 6GB RAM, and a mid range graphics card ???

Get the iPad Pro (9.7) edition with at least 128GB.  Then you can use iMovie, Pinnacle, or another video editing tool.

If you really need to shoot n 4k, then get a really good computer if you want to do desktop editing.
I have an old Macbook Pro and I had to install 16GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD just so it will play 4k. And editing works now but just barely.

I have a custom built windows machine with an I7 6700K, Asus Z170 Deluxe mother board, 32gb of ram, Nvidia GTX 980Ti video card, and a 27 inch 4k monitor.  I use Adobe Premier Pro for editing and it handles everything I throw at it with ease.  If you have the knowledge, build your own, you can choose the components you need or want.

If you want to edit in 4K, you'll need a pretty beefy computer, I would recommend using Adobe Premiere Pro. It's a great editor.

I am just getting into editing, but i did a lot of research and i ended up building a pretty nice set up for my PC, coming from a macbook from 2008, it was definitely time for an upgrade.
To me, I didn't think using a tablet would help me a whole lot, i feel i have a lot more available with  my 32 gigs of ram haha

I had the same issue; but I really like doing all my work on a laptop, not a desk top.  So I went for a gaming laptop.  Acer Nitro V17.  Works great.
1Tb HD + 128Gb SSD for program files; Intel Core i7 processor; GeForce GTX 960M graphics card.

It's all about the processor and video card. Get that right and you're sorted.  Edit 4K video whilst ripping a blu ray or two at the same time....

I think I forgot to tell yall what I need it for. I am not building a comp. I'm not making commercial quality vids. I just want something relatively user friendly to make my hiking videos look cool. I wanna do little stuff like add music, cut, import other videos and compile clips into one video. The iPad pro looks like the best and most practical tool since I can also use it as my.monitor while flying. Thanks all for taking time out of your day to respond.

I was thinking dual Xeon E5-2620 2.4 GHz (24 cores), 128 GB RAM and dual Nvidia Quadro K1200, HP Z840 Workstation. It;s only $9,200.00. I think I need to work smarter to realize this one.

Hi,
I had the same problem. I went for a new laptop - the bigger screen, keyboard and mouse makes editing MUCH faster and easier.
I went for a good gaming laptop on the lower side of the scale of the high end. Or that is what I think of it.
HP Pavilion 15' screen intel-corei7 with NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX. With Windows 10. It has 8GB of RAM, and 64-bit operating system
Use Movie Maker for a great amateur job.
I shoot 2.7K with my P3 Advanced. and it is very fast. I can only guess that is should work well with 4K.
I think it pays to invest in a fast, contemporary laptop that will last for a while and will not frustrate you when you use it.
I have regarded my new laptop as part of the package; it goes into the overall Phantom budget
Hope this helps.

You need a Computer as well Craig if you really want to do a great job. Once you realize all of the possibilites you will find yourself spending plenty of time using it. My opinion, buy a MAC. It comes with iMovie. The next step up is Final Cut Pro. There are a ton of plug-ins available. I am sure you have heard of Photoshop. For the longest time Photoshop was only available for a MAC.

Just bought an iPad pro and handles playing/editing 4K very well.

Which app do you use to edit video on the iPad Pro?

I bought a 128GB iPad Pro not long after launch partly because of the demonstration that it can edit 4 streams of 4k video in realtime, but the only app from Apple is iMovie and that is VERY restricting after using Final Cut Pro X.  I'd love to be able to grade and edit my Phantom 4 video son my iPad Pro but as it stands I can't find an app that is decent enough to do it.

On another note I recently converted my not long ago built PC into a Hackintosh and installed El Capitan and Final Cut Pro X and compared to my Mac Pro (which admittedly is now 9 years old!) it absolutely flies with editing video in FCP X.  Colour me happy
(With the PC/Hackintosh, not my iPad Pro)

This would be overkill for the majority on here but thought it might be interesting for those wondering what makes up a  professional level edit station.

Hey rodger thanks for the reply. Im def not interested in ipad AND  computer. Its one or the other since im literally only using the device for drone vids. I was leaning towards ipad pro cause it would double as a bad ass pilot screen but after thinking about it a comp does seem more practical i think?

What do you use for a screen on you remote control? Maybe invest in a 9.7-10.1 tablet and then you can use it as dual purpose as a editor and a big screen for your RC. I just bought a Ipad Air and really like it.

Imovie is restricting for you because you are coming from a back ground with final cut and final cut is just that much more boss than most programs?

Or would you objectively say its a restricting video editing app in general ? Do you feel imovie would be sufficient for an amateur who only wants to splice together a few 30-60 second clips and add in some music?
