I have been using an iPad with my RC. I honestly cannot use it for camera view. I have a hood on it and turned off auto brightness and set it all the way up. Still the picture is so dull and washed out it is almost useless. My iPhone works a bit better.

I am thinking about purchasing a used iPad mini 2. Does anyone know if this will help? Does the retinal display make a difference?

That is not the resolution you are experiancing, it is glare. Any tablet is going to have some degree of glare due to its size being able to collect and reflect more light. I have anti glare screen protectors on mine and it helps tremendously. If possible, try standing with some shade covering you. I have found that wearing a baseball hat helps a tiny bit. the bill of the hat helps shade the screen if you hold the tablet a little closer than normal. The sunshades help a tiny bit, but not much really. I use a Nvidia K1 and ipad mini 4.

This is the only brand of  "Armor" film I would be applying onto my iPad Air 2 Cellular screen...
Ghost Armor.
They have a kiosk at a nearby mall to me, so I may go in and grab a piece...

I use a glass "protector" on my phones. They dont scratch, wont yellow and are smooth to scroll with your finger, unlike the plastic ones.
These anti glare ones have a slightly rough texture and leave no fingerprints. Unless your hands are extra sweaty or greasy.

It's likely that matte finish, that prevents the sun glare from reducing screen visibility.

I have said it multiple time here and elsewhere - the iPad Air 2 wifi + cellular is without question in my mind - the very worst platform for a Phantom FPV - designed to be used - outdoors in sunlight.

Even using a good hood, there are far more times when the FPV is useless, then it is usable - at least here in NM.  I've considered a Hoodman hood for it but the downside is, 1) cost and 2) properly used, you lose LOS.

Sux big time but considering the cost to get the damn tablet, sinking more money into it is not realistic for me.  Pretty much stuck with absolute shit in daylight.

I bought a hood with no appreciable difference. I have ordered an anti-glare screen. Flying FPV is part of the fun.

Got the anti-glare screen. Not much better. At least not good enough to fly FPV.  However, when it is reduced to the corner, it is useable which makes me think that size matters. When I have used my phone without a hood or glare screen I get better resolution which makes me think that a smaller tablet, like the iPad mini, is part of the solution combined with an anti-glare screen.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Phone has smaller screen so less glare. A phones screen might be brighter also.

Most hoods are at a 90° degree angle, making them useless. Go look at the Hoodivision Pad Hat, it stands at a 70° angle to block overhead sun.

I have a Hoodivison sunshade and a $30 screen protector that's supposed to almost eliminate glare (doesn't work well at all)
Honestly, any device is going to be hard to use in the sun, the only thing I've seen that works great is from Hoodman.
Here's our DJI buddy Donnie's thread about it.

The iPad Air 2 is one the best FPV tablets. I chose it after researching and trying dozens of options. The anti glare coating built into the air 2(not the air 1) makes it easy to see in bright sunlight without a hood. If someone is complaining about an iPad Air, it's not an Air 2.
