Ok, only had my P4 for just over a week now, but when I try and get some distance between me and the bird I can't seem to get past 300 - 400M without losing signal and initiating return to home feature.  I read figures of 4miles / 6k's but I'm taking it this is in **ideal** surroundings, or rather NO surroundings ?!  I must admit I'm flying from my garden which has tree's (only 4-5M tho) all around but still, I'd expect a bit more than 3-400M if the thing can do up to 6000M with so called ideal surroundings.

Am I missing something here ?!

Wi-fi interference is possible, you could check the firmware versions and app version. I had even worse with controller version 1.8 and a recent go app. I downgraded the controller and app and problem was resolved.

You could try out of town away from interference first.

Yeah tried another location and hit my maximum (what I set in settings) 1km without fail!

2k no problem earlier, altho did lose signal a bit and had to gain altitude to keep a good connection, but yeah happy with that.  Can't help but feel tho that you're gonna have to go way above legal limits to get like 5k+, I can't see the signal holding at 110m from the ground ...

Many people exceed that limit all the time, out to sea for example. The range is determined by two things primarily, clear line of sight between the aircraft and the RC unit, meaning no buildings, hills trees etc.

The other factor is less understood, and that is proximity to sources of interference. Few people understand that the control signals are lumped into a category called 'non-essential services', meaning they have to take their chances with each other, and there are literally zillions of devices in the same radio band. So the further away from civilisation you are, the longer the range you will get.

Dji's claims 6k (or what ever distance they advertise) this would be in a very controlled environment, normally non of us would ever be in that type of test environment flying

Even tho I've took above a river for 15 mins (avatar picture for example), I seem to have this fear of actually just flying it out to sea from the beach.  I really want to get some pictures looking back at the beach from say 500 - 1000m but have a fear my bird will fall into the sea and then it's ...

I guess more travels over water will give me more confidence.
