Have posted here again in case Technical was not the right spot for this query:

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between "ENABLE OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE" & "ALLOW HORIZONTAL OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE" in the MAVIC setup screen?
Have both turned on - in fact have all the obstacle avoidance features turned on and when I fly the Mavic towards myself it stops and warns me on screen of obstacle but will not back off as I appoach it. Any feedback would be much appreciated from this newly converted Yuneec pilot in Melbourne, Australia.

It's only going to back up as you approach it if you are using active track on yourself with obstacle avoidance on.

On your other question, the Allow horizontal stuff is for tap fly, read what the settings say, some are just for certain flight modes.
