Well Cap, A few things to consider.  When flying, a good LOS (line of sight) is important, and also position of the antenna to the bird.  So buildings, home, and how far you are will affect your signal.

OK, well let us start off with a few basic questions.
Which model bird do you have?
Do you have a lot of homes in the area you are flying?
Are there any above ground power lines?

seems a large batch of P3S have issues with firmware past 1.6.8 I had one..1.5.7+ worked great 1.6.8 never once worked great..1.7.9 is working on replaced craft..2 bits  
I have a second P3S and will test distance soon. (both are setup and using same modified remote)

I have had that flying in parking lot of a condo complex with lots of wifi antennas on the exterior of the buildings

I get that alot since I upgrade to 1.79 firmware but it's an easy fix....buy the litchi app.
