When I try to use the Dji go film editor,  it can't find the sd card in my phone. I use the phone for flying with the app & it finds the footage from what must be the flight record. Is there an easier way to get the footage off the sd card other than leaving it in the drone?

Take the SD card out of the camera, put it in a adapter to fit into your computer.
