Aloha John,
By now, I am sure you are totally burned out on software fixes for the tilt, but it may actually be sequence that is the issue, not hardware. Now, your solution has a bit of brilliance to it and on the other hand, it could be considered obvious. But, if the obvious solution was real, a lot more P4s would have the problem. Hmm.
What I have learned about tilt calibrations is that IMU and gimbal calibrations have sequential issues. If I do an IMU calibration on my P3P and then do a gimbal calibration, the camera soon goes back to tilt. But, if I do a gimbal calibration followed by the IMU calibration, the level is rock steady. Hmm.
Oddly enough, it looks to me like, from what you are saying, there is an obstacle causing a leveling issue with your camera. You did not mention an obstacle causing the problem, it is inferred. The seat for the gimbal should be level with the legs of the P4. Something appears to me to be disturbing the level. You may want to inspect the gimbal base to see if there is a clean seat at each edge. Is one side pushed out? If so resolve the issue.
Mahalo for your effort in rectifying your attitude issues regarding this problem. That is refreshing. We all try to help. As it is, you seemed to have solved your problem. Please do investigate further as I have noted. If you do find a fault, it may help others who would be expected to also get frustrated as you did.
Anyway, it is good to hear that you have gotten in the air with a level gimbal.
