The best start is to film in LOG format on the Inspire.  This will protect your shadows and highlights and give you the best starting point.

In After Effects, I would start with CURVES to bring your contrast back to life.   Then something to bring the color saturation back up.   Hue/Saturation would be an okay start but some specialist plug-ins would be better.

Better yet, download the free version of DaVinci Resolve from the Black Magic website and you will have more control than you know what to do with!

I did this grade in DaVinci in a matter of minutes -

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim, appreciate this info

LUTS or lookup tables can be a good starting point but don't rely on them solely or use them at their full strength. Think of them like filters for photos. I often use LUTS as a basis for my color grade. I usually run them at 25-50% opacity, review my scopes and adjust curves and review other data to expose the shot correctly while pulling as much detail as possible.

The inspire's camera codec is pretty compressed so grading latitude isn't the best but if you start with the flattest LOG profile, -3 contrast, -2 or -3 saturation you can improve the image quite a bit. I think the "auto" and color profiles that are set by default are too saturated and too sharp. They leave zero room for grading.

Nuemanfilms has a great LUT package which can be used in most if not all major NLE's for $49 designed specifically for the Inspire 1. They work great if you follow the custom camera settings I shared above.

Good Luck!

I recently grabbed these and i'm stoked about it.  I've been flying in LOG with those settings and sharpness at -1, pop on a LUT, adjust opacity- Brilliant.  I feel like post grading is such a rewarding experience.  You really get a good feeling dialing in a sick grade instead of letting the inspire oversaturate your brilliant shots.  I second scooterlam.

Glad I could help and influence you to step outside the default modes =) The compressed raw footage looks ugly to the untrained eye but to a video editor/colorist its a must to create something professional looking.

FYI I find that -1 on the sharpness is too soft and too much detail is lost. For now I'm sticking with 0 sharpness and -2, -2 contrast and saturation until DJI tones down the sharpness settings.

Much agreed.  I'm now keeping sharpness at 0. -1 is just too dull.  I see this as a bug considering the major jump between the two.

Have you messed with that 3D LUT Creator at all?  I think that is all NeumanFilms used to create those.  I downloaded the demo and got some pretty awesome results with it.  Although, not ready to drop 200 bucks to get it. Cheers!
