If I'm unable to get to a location and I need to check the longitude and latitude of the location,
what is the best way to obtain the numbers. I have an app that does it but you have to be
there.

You can start with google earth.  However you you go to google and type in latitude and longitude for known place.

The issue I guess is large tracts of land using one name.  

If you use normal Google maps, you can right click on a point on the map and choose "What's here?" and it will give both a name and a Latitude,Longitude.

Enjoy playing with google earth and google maps

You can also use GS Pro and create a Waypoint mission.   It will record XYs for each point you create on the map.
