I have used datcon to extract .dat files to csv files which I can read and get position, orientation and time from. Is there a marker anywhere to tell when a video (or image) was started or stopped?

There is no info for video images, but all still shots have the usual EXIF data embedded in the file. You just need an EXIF viewer to see them.
