Yes, need line of sight for best reception. Don't fly behind buildings too unless your RTH home is set properly/high enough.

If you fly behind any object(tree, house and all other type massive) the you can lose both video and control signals. The best during flight is the copter can see you and you can see the copter in a straight line.

A convertible would be best for this.  Putting your controller inside a metal box doesn't work well, you will have short range.  I have seen antennas made for putting on the vehicle for this purpose.

Turn on your drone and then sit down with the remote control inside your camper and see how the signal will drop dramatically. The waves do not cross metal barriers.

Don't do it.  Like WD9EON says maybe a convertible or on the back of a motorcycle you could use "follow me", but the inside of a car is basically an "obstacle".

Remember that you don't "out run" you're AC. You could try laying on your back on the roof of the RV. That would make for some cool footage. Just make sure it's in an open area, for both you and the AC! ;)

If you can open the car roof and the copter has a sight in straight line to the RC then it´s not required to put the RC outside the car. If you close the roof you ´ll have a cage a´la FARADAY.

The AC needs clear unobstructed view of RC.

The Display needs as clear an unobstructed connection to RC. Remember the Screen Display is not receiving high power WiFi but low power .... the high power WiFi is RC to AC.

So the overall answer is try not to have any 'material' between any of the three items.

I think I'll go with the rc outside the car window and get the phone unobstructed between rc and phone

Magnetic interference is always something you should be concerned with if you are flying within a vehicle although curiosity does make me wonder why you would want to stay in a vehicle rather then fly it outside. It's also strong advised that you do fly outside rather then remain inside while your aircraft is outside.

Its funny actually .....

On saturday - a new guy in our club asked me to look at his Standard as he knew mine was capable of greater range etc. and he was a new owner.
I fired up his P3S and had warnings next to my van. I fired up mined and had no warnings in exact same position RIGHT ALONGSIDE the van ... I'm talking literally near touching it.

I've flown my P3S along the side of my van ... Renault Master ..... videoing in through the cargo door etc. - not a hint of anything ...
