Do i have to cellular or can i just use a wifi ipad mini 2? Do the remote or drone actually pick up the gps stuff?

no cell needed but u need gps module on ipad if u want to use features like follow me, or set home point to rc location.otherwise no u dont

I simply use my iPhone as a wifi point for my (non-cellular) ipad to connect to for wifi.

let me answer just your question above:
no you do not need cellular on ipad, u can cache the map of where you are going to fly. aince you dont want to leave wifi on as it may interfere.
the gps enabled devices like some ipads, will come in handy if you are going to use features like follow me or setting dynamic home point

Hey Ray,
This guy will have the ability to fly a pre programmed unattended flight after the new FW upgrade, using waypoints.
Are you sure this is a good thing?

What many ppl dont realize is that the wifi only model not only lacks cellular but also dont have a GPS chip. So if you dont cashe your maps in advance or want to use dynamic home point its useless.

It is not useless, unless you have an internet connection while flying you need to cache map if you want an accurate DISPLAY of the map. If you do not cache the map the map will just be grey, but the quad will still fly fine. The quad has its own gps. The only time the tablet needs GPS is if you want to reset the current homepoint to where the transmitter is currently, in other words if the location is changed and you and it to fly home to the transmitter and not where it took off from with a RTH.

The cellular version has a gps and you do not need a sim card. Also a bluetooth connection on a wifi tablet to compatible gps unit will also allow the homepoint to change.

Not a big deal if you fly and land at the same point. But you need to cache the maps if you want them displayed.

judging from the question asked, i would have to say " no it isnt a good thing!!"

I mean i have my iphone but i was hoping to use my ipad. Is it a bad thing to cache the maps?

I also use the mini 2 wi fi model.  I connect with a hot spot from my iphone.  Works perfect.  I cache the maps before a flight.  Disable hardware code for the ipad 2, this is in the go app.

In your dji go app under settings there is "hardware decide" iPad mini 2 uses a7 processor, it is advised to turn that off so iPad does not overheat

Setting your phone as a hotspot is fine as long as your cell provider doesn't charge an arm and leg for it. My provider wants $10/mn for 1 gig. Then whatever per MB over.

If I jailbreak my iPhone I can cheat and use the hotspot without them knowing but I don't want to jailbreak my phone.
