Yeah, that's what I want to know.  Doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

...well, from the article it seems his battery died, but it doesn't specify how low he allowed it to get. So did he not set a home point?

This has to be a Phantom 2 as well, because it recorded sound?!?!

Could be failsafe, either lost connection or low battery , It can trigger return or home or auto-landing depending on which one you choose in the settings. But I bet this was some system error that forced the drone to land (Solid Red lights clearly visible when he catches it)  that manual refers to as critical error.
