For me this case is too big and bulky. I would rather look for a more "portable" version which can be taken as hand luggage on plane even if it holds only the drone (and perhaps a battery or two in the empty spaces + charger) . If necessary the remote (presumably many only need to travel with one) can go elsewhere in another bag.
lets see if anyone comes up with offering a viable solution of this kind !

A backpack for the Inspire 1 would be awesome!  It would greatly influence my decision to get one.  It sounds like it's fairly heavy compared with the Phantom 2 but hopefully it will fit in a backpack so we can take it on hikes.

Can DJI program the Inspire 1 to a "Travel Setting" where the transition stays midway. That way (I think),  the case should be smaller.  GO Professional Cases should also make a small and a large case for the Inspire 1. I bought the Inspire 1 with 2 controllers.

The slot for the gimbal seems rather loosen. May not be suitable for long haul transportation.

I advice you guys not to buy cases now.

We will provide a pack mode function. The Inspire 1 can transform to flat itself.

Thanks Tao,
that is exactly what I thought could be done. Can you advise what overall dimensions would be achieved if transformed to flatten itself, once gimbal and camera are removed ?

can you give an estimated time about the case.

The case which is on pre-ordered is quite heavy for Air-travel. 10KG + the  inspire weight is on a heavier side. Any chance of the case going light weight?

Some of you guys make me laugh.  Tao.zhao is clearing advising, "I advi[s]e you guys not to buy cases now. We will provide a pack mode function. The Inspire 1 can transform to flat itself."  Still, some of you insist on talking about it.  Who you going to blame when the drone doesn't fit into the case---not DJI!  Maybe I'm just not getting it---shopping to buy something you don't even have all the facts about.  Is it that difficult to wait until then?

Just ordered the new DJI nylon backpack for my 2nd P2V+.  A little pricey but very light and made of nylon. Case manufacturers for the Inspire should realize that there is a real need for this type of light weight minimalist case. We're obviously not going to use it for checked baggage, but it's perfect for day to day, local travel. Our only alternatives are either the cardboard Inspire box or the heavy hard case alternatives.

Case manufacturers would be wise to pay attention to what many of us have been asking for - a 21" x 20" x 9" hard shell case to fit the inspire 1 in "pack mode" with the camera and props removed, plus 1 controller, a couple of batteries, the camera, and accessories:

This would be the same length and depth as, but only 2" wider than the smallest Phantom case currently made.  While it would not technically be a "legal" sized carry on, neither is any current Phantom case, yet would (like the Phantom cases) still fit in the enlarged overhead bins of modern airliners.

Unlike depicted in the hastily photoshopped image, the controller would probably need to lay on its side - a 7" dimension.

Any case manufacturer that can get something like this on the market by January for about $250 would sell a lot of units as the first Inspire 1s start shipping.

The smaller Phantom 2 Vision + case is only $209, and this case would be the same height and depth, and only 2" wider.   That's 11% more volume for 20% greater cost, which seems fair.

The larger Phantom 2 cases are 24" x 18" x 12", or 37% larger than I'm proposing for an Inspire 1 case, yet cost only $249.

Don't know if this is real or scam, but check the link from rcgroups.  Seems like the DJI Direct orders may be getting a soft case.

Yes.  You can carry on up to a maximum of 2 x 5.7 Ah batteries, and an unlimited number of 4.5 Ah batteries as spares.  They must be protected from damage and short circuit, and all spare lithium ion batteries are prohibited in checked baggage.
Technically, you can tranport a third 5.7 Ah battery, but only if installed in the Inspire 1, and checked.  (If carried on, it would count against your 2 large battery maximum).

See FAA Battery FAQ.

DJI apparently sized the 4.5 Ah battery at 99.9 Wh to stay under the 100 Wh trigger that limits the number that can be carried.

Looks like the form factor of the case I was hoping for!!
