Yes, DJI has confirmed it is going to update the Smart Controller to be compatible with the Mini 2.  As always with DJI you never know when.

It would more than likely require a firmware update.  On 11/5 the Mavic Air 2 Controller which is the same as the Mini 2 received an updated to add the Mini 2.

The 11/5 Controller updated had lots of bugs and fix update was issued on 11/7.  

So, more than likely the Smart Controller would need a firmware update to add the Mini 2.
