Has anyone had a flyaway with the max distance turned on, or is it even possible?

What do you mean by with max distance turned on? Do you mean the max altitude of 500 meters?

Did you lose GPS or have the home point not set during take off?

I don't think I've ever seen a flyaway on a P3 that didn't have something to do with user error.

Depending on what app you use,  the DJI GO app does have a max distance ON/OFF switch and when enabled you can adjust the max distance from 15-500m.In beginner mode the height and distance are both limited to 30m

I would assume that if you have a flyaway, the aircraft won't know where it is, so the max distance won't help.

Ken, is it normal during almost every startup from the same location, showing "calibrate" highlighted instead of normal highlighted in the compass? I've only noticed it showing it this way the past 5 flights or so.

Meaning it's telling you to calibrate?
If so then it may be the area you are flying at or something keep throwing the compass off and it needs to re-calibrated.

Okay but it just started doing this from the same location point I've always started from with no issues in the past. A bit annoying to do the silly dance every time I fly. Maybe it's the rebar underneath the concrete in my driveway?

Rebar, rings, magnetic money clip, a car relatively close by.......any of these things can affect the compass reading, if they are close.
Happened to me with a tiny magnetic money clip in my front right pocket....screwed up the compas and took my thick brain over 45 minutes to figure it out.

It's not an actual message that I'm seeing but next to the compass status, it shows both "normal" and "calibrate" and it seems the calibrate is highlighted white whereas the normal is not.

I do the dance everytime I fly! It takes 30 sec. a little song and dance for a lot of peace of mind.

Yes, there is a calibrate button there that you press when you want to calibrate. If the aircraft needs a calibration, it will notify you in RED.

Can you please clarify your question so that we can try to assist..

My guess is that you want to know if it is possible for the Phantom to breach the max altitude or distance you have set?  and if so did it result in a flyaway or is a flyaway possible as a result?

Okay then. So it's not really telling me that I need to calibrate if it's not in red which I have seen before in a message type thing I believe.
