I was told not to fly the Phantom aircraft under the take-off ground level because it could "think" it had landed and stop the motors.
Ist it true?

Whoever you are getting information from has no idea or is joking with you.
People fly from the tops of mountains and cliffs all the time.
The Phantom doesn't care as long as there is some air below it.
The only time the  Phantom "thinks" it has landed is when it has landed.

No, not true!!!!!

The aircraft has GPS, VPS, IMU, compass, & barometer.... Far too many sensors and far too much technology to be fooled about when it is flying and when it is not flying.

Your take-off altitude is just that -> your take-off attitude and has nothing to do with the Phantom knowing if it's flying or landed.... It does establish Home Point and is a basis for some limits within the GO App, but that's about all....

Yep, the phantom don't reference the alt for shutting off the engines.  Just like you said, the home point is a GPS point.  If you launch from a boat, move your boat, then tell it to go home - it will end up landing in the water.  If you do a one handed recovery (grab the phantom and throttle down), it senses that the alt isn't changing when you throttle down and assumes you've landed, then shuts down the motors.
