I have an iPad mini wifi only. Is there a way to get maps while you are flying? I've read that you can cache maps but I've never been able to figure out how to get that to work or if its even possible.

Just cache the area you want to fly in prior to leaving your house when you have access to wifi

The question is how do I do that? In the DJI Go app I've tried zooming in to the area that I plan to fly while I am at home but when I get to that location, I get nothing.

Go into general settings menu and switch on 'Cache Map In Background', then go to map and zoom into area of interest, and it should save to memory.

Hello Crowesnest, first please enable this option and then you can zoom in and move the map in order to cache the map while the internet or wifi service is available for your ipad. 后台缓存地图.PNG

I have done that but when I get to the site I get nothing. Does the app need to remain on and functioning (has not timed out) from the time that I put the map in cache to the time that I fly?

As soon as I tether my iPhone to the tablet, it disconnects the video feed from the bird?

I get something similar: I thought: "well, I can always share my internet connection via Bluetooth", but as soon as I tether iPad and iPhone I get "disconnected" message from the app.  The weird thing is I still have video link from the aircraft and the app says the RC is connected.  I didn't dare flying in such condition, I just shut down the Internet link, but I wonder if this is related to the latest FW/iOS app update I've been reading about

I don't think so. I was getting the same disconnect prior to upgrading.

Well, then maybe the only option is to cache the map. As some other people already confirmed, it suffices to visualize the map on the app while there's Internet coverage. At least this is the behavior I get from mine: latest iOS and FW

Do I need the iPad to be connected to the remote control when caching the maps?

No you don't.
There are no tricks, the process is very simple.
Have you definitely enabled Cache Maps in Background?

Really strange that this doesn't work for me. I have to be doing something wrong, I just can't figure out what it is.

I have the setting for caching maps in the background. I then zoom in to the area I want to fly as close as it will go. I then back out to make sure I cover the entire region. It seems to work just fine.

Other times I turn on my iPhone's hotspot and connect the iPad's wifi to it. Bluetooth may be too slow and subject to problems.

Either way, both solutions work just like they are supposed to.

Method 1 (mentioned): setting for caching maps in the background turned on.
Method 2 (mentioned): using the cell phone's hotspot and connecting via the iPad wifi
Method 3 (not mentioned unless I missed it): caching your maps on the iPad in Google maps, not connected to the DJI Go app or the DJI remote: see this site.
