ive done this multiple time, via having the ipad plugged in, it says firm ware downloaded, i then go ahead and istall. All seems ok, turn it on again, and it says firmware still out of date. Any ideas? thanks

Sounds like you may have an older version of the firmware (remote controller with v1.3.20 or above uses the DJI GO app for updates).  

In any case, just try the alternative method of using a micro SD card to update the firmware.  It's on page 9 of the  Firmware_Update_Guide_en_v1.4.pdf

What aircraft do you have and in the about page what does it say the firmware version is for the RC ?

its the phantom 3 advanced, my rc software is  saying version unknown.
my flight controller serial number is 03z0576611

Sync your flight records and delete the app then reinstall and see if the status page still says update needed.
Also, everything functions correctly right?

ok, how do sync flight records?
i have had one limited close proximity flight, as was unsure about tx, but everything worked fine yes.

You don't really need to sync since that's all you have. But for the future so all your flights are on the DJI cloud, from the home page the top left icon (paper airplane)  takes you to to your flight records. From there tap the top right icon (cloud) and that syncs your records.
Also, you can tap a flight and play the flight back.

hhhmmm tried the update agin, now saying the about screen I'm on versions 1.6.0 and no warnings to upgrade firmware any more.
