'I'd like to think for the price of the beautiful quality DJI drones, they'd make a better attempt at fool-proofing it.'

For every fool-proof measure, there is always a fool who is dumb enough to out-smart it.

"before ejecting battery and bracing for impact."

Priceless

So now we'll have the pre-flight safety check.

'Just before impact please place your head between your knees'

This thread could end with this one simple but incredibly accurate statement. I am going to hang on to it!

A fool can't 'outsmart'.  He accidentally finds the unseen flaws.

There's no fool-proofing against wanton abuse.

Best crash prevention is not to sell these things to idiots.

So, two days experience and you think you are experienced enough to ignore the manual and intentionally fly it out of line of sight...

I thought you gave us a clue with 'Not sure what, likely a tree out of FOV' - in my experience if I can't see it I'm in with a chance of hitting it!

Yes, retreat appears to be the best option at this time.

Serious post: Do pre and post flight check's to make sure everything is physically okay. Make sure your batteries are full before you fly.
Load your maps and check your GPS lock.
Learn to fly in Atti!
Be aware of your surroundings as in objects, people, and the weather.
Don't focus solely on your camera, look up to follow your drone visually.
Make sure your props are on correctly and tight.
Make sure you have a good clean compass calibration. Don't calibrate if you're getting compass errors.
Hover and go through the controls (pitch, roll, yaw, throttle up/down) for a bit before you send it out.
Pay attention to your battery life especially if you're flying out a good distance. Make sure you have enough juice to bring it back. This also goes with paying attention to the weather since depending which way the wind is blowing, can make it more difficult to fly back.
