Because you were flying straight up which is always the worst angle for keeping a good signal strength.
It's all about antenna geometry.
You get optimum signal when the antennas are parallel and facing each other.
Try flying out a bit rather than straight upwards.

Have you tried adjusting the antenna? Like Labroides mentioned , try flying out a bit rather than straight upwards.
