Is it bad for the drone if I use the controller to spin the motors without the propellors?

A DJI tech told me just don't run them for more than 15 seconds at full speed without props.

Thanks! So if I just want to start the motors (by just moving the joystick controllers to the bottom corners) but I don't increase the speed then it won't harm the drone?

It won't hurt them to run up to power, as long as you don't keep them at full power for any length of time.  Also advisable when calibrating with the computer to remove the props when it is powered up.

No props also means no cooling air flowing through the vents and around the gimbal and camera. Don't be surprised if the components get hot

They won't overheat if you don't hold at high power for long periods.  A few seconds won't bother them at all.

i dont think he was suggesting they would actually overheat, just letting the OP know that if he noticed them warmer than they usually would be when flying, not to be alarmed or worried.

Getting back on topic...

I've done this many times. And, my motors run just fine. As Capt. Bill noted above, I would never recommend doing this for long periods of time though -- like to discharge the battery.
