I'm heading to Oregon, USA from British Columbia,Canada by car to view the solar eclipse as well as fly my Phantom 3 Advanced for aerial photographs/videos for my own recreational use.

Do i need a licence to fly in the US? I checked online and theres two websites which needs to pay. (Unclear to me)
http://federaldroneregistration.com/ (25$) and https://registermyuas.faa.gov (5$)
https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2491507,00.asp (Drone Regulations: What You Need To Know)

I have a Phantom 3 advanced and several hours of flight time as well im familiar with Canada Transport Drone Regulations - as well as USA FAA Regulation.
Like i said i'll be just doing aerial photography and videos. (Recreational Use)

Straight up answer would be great + explanation.

Thanks in advance!

No, you do not need a licence. Simple as that.

Our courts ruled that the FAA cannot require registration here any longer.  Have fun and enjoy !

You don't need any licence or registration.
The PC mag article tells you that.
And the first website you linked is a total scam.

Are you planning on using the P3A to photo/video the eclipse?

Nope. I got a telescope with a white light solar filter 8" cap and a dslr on the viewfinder. I'll try my best to video it.

As for my PH3A, just cinematic scenery shots. And maybe, maybe if there's not too much people, ill set my PH3A 100m in the sky to catch the darkness settle in.

Good Choice, it will cook the DJI Cameras without the proper filter.

For the drone:
  • Lock the exposure and colour balance so that the auto exposure doesn't hide the darkness.
  • Try and get a wide angle view of distant mountains so that you have a chance to catch the shadow moving across the land if you speed the footage up a bit.

Remember that they don't like people flying in their national parks, but as a foreigner they are not going to do much about it so why worry!

Looks like ill have a great time in Oregon! It has been brought up to my attention, my first link (25$) federaldroneregistration website seems to be not legit/scam. Please ignore it and ill try to remove it if i can. Cheers!

Is it possible to point the Phantom camera at the sun?  If you tilt the Phantom onto it's back so that it has a chance, the gimbal will just point the camera back down!
